Audition Requirements & Material for Woodwinds and Brass

  • Your woodwind and brass auditions will be held on Sunday, October 2 during regular rehearsal time and recorded in a separate room.
  • Please download and print the audition material for your instrument.
  • You will be evaluated on overall preparation, tone, intonation, rhythm and musicianship.
  • Say your name out loud before you begin.

There are no chair placement auditions for bass clarinet, bass trombone, tuba, harp, piano or percussion.

Audition Material

Audition Requirements for Strings 

  • Please read the instructions carefully. (Copy of instructions can be downloaded here)
  • You are evaluated on overall preparation, intonation, rhythm and musicianship.
  • If there are short rests, count them silently. If there are rests for longer than three measures, pause briefly then continue.
  • Please play your audition material in the order shown.
  • Say your name clearly and distinctly before you begin.

VIOLIN I

Smetana – Pick-up to four measures after letter A to letter B.
Smetana – 15 measures before letter D to four measures before letter E.
Smetana – Letter K to letter L.

CONCERTMASTER AUDITIONS: Any violinist interested in auditioning for Concertmaster should please state their intention at the beginning of the audition. Play the required excerpts (above) first, followed by two to no more than three minutes of a prepared solo of your choice. This solo may be anything in you have prepared that demonstrates the highest standard of your current technical ability and musicianship.

VIOLIN II

Smetana – 14 measures before letter B to five measures after B.
Smetana – 15 measures before letter D to four measures before letter E.
Smetana – 24 measures from the end to the end.

CELLO

Berlioz –From #1 to #2 (Take the second endings. Do not take the repeats)
Berlioz – Pick-up to 13 measures after #3 to #5
Copland – Buckaroo Holiday – From the beginning to #5. (count rests silently, but accurately)

BASS

Berlioz – Pick-up to 13 measures after #3 to #5.
Smetana – Letter I to letter K.
